Going through some old* coins and found some with green discoloration. It's worst on this Ike.

    * old as in I've had them for many years

I'm guessing this is PVC residue I've read about. The coin package is labeled "proof" and I don't remember where I got it... probably was a promo where it was free with a $__ order. But now I'm concerned: I don't remember seeing the discoloration back when I first received it. Should I not trust the packaging of any of the similarly packaged coins I bought 25 years ago?

    Thanks.

I agree, probably PVC damage (if the flip is soft and pliable, it's probably PVC).

Toss the flip, give the coin an acetone bath and put it in a safe holder.

Just ordered a pack of 50 SAFLIPS on-line.

    Thanks for the advice.

Soaked it in acetone a couple times. I was delighted with the results while the coin was wet! Dry it's lost some of its luster at an angle (left side of the obverse, middle of the reverse), although still looks good straight on. some angles. Any chance that more acetone baths will restore the luster?

Do PVC flips damage non-wartime Jefferson nickels, too? I'm starting to see green on everything!
