Hi. I've been reading the forum for a long time and now just joined. I found this coin listed in the red book: 1776-1976 Silver clad, variety 2 Proof Coin without any price. I didn't know if it was unique or an error coin that they just decieded to list. I see many ads for Ike sets but I never see that coin. Te only dollar coin proofs of that year I can find are the 1976S silver, 1976S copper-nickel variety 1, and the 1976S copper-nickel variety 2. I was just wondering if someone could tell me a little more about it. Thanks.
Welcome to the forum. Here is a link to a previous discussion on this particular coin. You should find the answers there. 1976 Ike Dollar with variety
Yeah I read through that page and I still couldn't find my answer. You said that there was a 1976 type 1 and type 2 in silver. In the red book it lists a type 1 in silver with an "S" mint mark. It also lists a type 2 in silver with NO mint mark. Is that coin supossed to have an "S" mint mark too? That was my question. Maybe I'm relying on the red book a little more than I should. This was brought up by Gus in the link you gave me: "Why does the danso book for eisenhower dollars, (which includes proof only issues), not list a T1/T2 for the 40% silver proof, when it lists them for the P, D, and clad proofs?" There was no mention of the 1976 T2 proof without the mint mark, yet in the red book there is no 1976 T2 proof with an "S" mint mark. That's my confusion. I've been trying to search through the internet, but haven't found one yet. If you can't give me an answer other than that link, then that's ok. This is still my favorite site for coin questions and answers.
bigelm - To the best of my knowledge - and I'm not an Ike collector so I might be wrong - I don't think there is a type 2 for the '76-S silver. There is for the clad Proof - just not the silver Proof. As for the Proof without a mint mark - I think there are only 4 known.
Thanks. That's all I wanted to know. No that I know that its of no value for me to possibly think about collecting my problem is solved. I'm only 16 and have been collecting since I was 8, so I'm still learning. Sorry If I posed too much of a stupid question.
One more point of clarification about this. There is a type 2 in silver - but they are not Proof coins - they are business strikes.
Don't worry, the only stupid questions are the one's not asked. Stick around, there are many knowledgeable members here to help out. Welcome aboard!
