1976 Dime . Doubling or error?

    Came acroos a 1976 dime yesterday that looks interesting. Thoughts??

    D mint mark looks like it could be grease filled...tough to tell with out magnification

    It's my guess that it is a die break. It's very common for the metal post that forms the center of a letter or number to break off and allow metal to flow into the void. I don't think there isn't a single denomination that hasn't had this occur at one time or another.

    If it had been a grease-filled die, the mintmark would not be visible.

    Chris,
    Thanks for that info...I've seen these referred to GFDs but often wondered how that was. A broken or chipped die makes more sense to me though...I have a couple of LWC where the "B" in LIBERTY looks like this as well (the upper loop of the B is mostly filled in) someone told me was a GFD, but again a chipped or broken die makes more sense...the little metal post braking off makes more sense to me...
