I went to one of my local coin shops a couple of months ago, and offered him three 2$ 1976 star notes in sharp condition, two of which were consecutive (I have no idea how to grade a bill). He told me they are worth 2$ each (so I held onto them), and then proceeded to offer me red seal 2$ bills ('53 & '63), all either heavily circulated or with holes, for face value. I picked up 5 of them. I guess my question is twofold: 1: Are the '76 bills worth anything to a dealer and 2: did the coin dealer just not know as that is not his specialty, and is it generally true that coin & bill collecting are separate specialties?
A Dealer is like any other businessman. He is in biz to make a profit. The $2 stars can be worth a premium depending on condition. What Fed Bank were they from? What condition were they? (you said sharp) I am looking for condition as in the folloewing terms; XF-AU-CHCU and Gem. To him they may not have been worth the trouble, or he may have not known paper that well. Yes they are 2 separate entities each with their own lingo and specialties. Please post images so we can see the notes. RickieB
I took a $100 consec unc strap of regular $2 notes to my dealer. They bought for $115 because they have a buyer at $125-130. Should have kept them I think though.
notes, like coins, will have different values from different collectors in different places. Your dealer might not be able to sell $2 notes in his shop, and therefore they are worth face to him. Take the same notes to another dealer who can flip them any chance he gets them, and he will buy them for more then face because he knows he can sell them. Like RickieB said, dealers are in the business to make money by selling money. They cant make a profit if the stuff they buy sits on the shelves and never sells.

According to my sources, there were only 640,000 printed and these are worth a premium... They do not look unc by any means but XF is still worth a premium. I would say list them on E-Bay... RickieB
wow i completely missed they were star notes... they are certainly worth more the $2, and with what RickieB said makes it all the more certain with a limited mintage.

I have looking high and low for some nice $2 sequential star notes. I've checked ebay already, does anyone have any for sale at a decent price. I'll buy up to 100 if the price is right.
