I opened a roll of uncirculated 1974 s pennies and noticed that on one, letters were missing especially the of, then as I continued to look at the others, it appears that they (the mint) tried to fix the problem. What I find interesting is that on one penny, it appears they used a zero for an o. Then fixed finally. A few of the cents the oF is flat, then the F is fixed then.. Finally right. I have read about grease etc. I'm sorry I'm not officially literate in coin talk but I would love to know what might have happened? ..and are they worth more than a cent?
Hi and welcome to CoinTalk From what I see all your Cents are indeed circulated.. They have evidence of circulation marks. So that tells me that these were picked out of various rolls and put together into 1 roll. Each one shows different striking issues such as the Grease Filled Die that will affect the letters you pointed out. It is a common to find these issues and they have no premium. Worth? 1 Cent each.
The roll is stamped 1974s and had zero indication of being opened. I know the two pennies on each end had color change, but all others appear very bright and clean and all are 1974s. I suppose someone went to great lengths to change? It is interesting the one that has a zero for an o. It only goes to the bottom of the second line in the F. The other o's go mid between both lines in the F. I appreciate your answer and time!

I still don't think this is an Uncirculated Roll. They would all look exactly the same coming from the same batch of Cents. They all look different. Here is an example Dent on the rim, old fingerprint, gunk near the steps
I posted that one thinking that perhaps a worker was trying to fix the problem? That is the only one like that photo..i took a sample batch photo with flash so that you might get an idea of color. I appreciate the help very much.

The problem is that unless you buy a roll directly from the Mint or even a box from a Federal Reserve Bank, you cannot rely on someone telling you the truth. I've been collecting for about 60 years, and I can't count how many times I've heard someone say, "I got them from my grandfather, so they must be good." I'm with Paddy. The roll was put together by someone. Chris

So, for my brain, a roll that appears like the following, does not mean uncirculated. I officially have learned a lot already. I think I will delve into the forum and learn all that I can. I just now notice there is a coin roll place in the forum and I apologize for posting this here. Again, thank you!
I'll give you an example. I bought an original $50 Mint bag of 1980 Lincoln cents. I new it had not been tampered with because I examined the stitching with a loupe. When I finished searching the entire bag, I had 228 "Clashed Y" coins which I knew came from the same die because there were two die scratches that served as markers. I kept all of these coins, more than four rolls, separate from the others. So you see, it is very easy for this to happen. Chris
