So.. Has anyone seen one of the 1974 W Lincoln Cent? In Aluminum? I was reading that they made 1.5M.. Do They have a "W" MM? How many still exist? I think I saw it on CopperCoins Any details on the story..
Ah.. I see.. "Nobody" (wink) has one.. Wow... Thanks so much for the link.. I hope that someday the SS will let some of these get out.. Like that Gold Coin... confiscated after Auction.. Then released. "It is unclear whether any of these latter pieces still exist. The Secret Service has said that it will confiscate any of these pieces should they turn up in the market place."
They have no mint mark. In fact, the west point mint produced normal copper cents for circulation during the 1970s and 1980s but they lacked a mint mark as well so they are indistinguishable from normal Philadelphia cents. Our local trivia master Clinker had a great post about it a few months ago. If you want to read more about it, look here: http://www.cointalk.com/t42402/
The aluminum 1974 cents were struck in Philadelphia in 1973. West Point did not start striking cents until 1975 and they were all in copper with no mintmark.
I checked out the Clinker link. My records do not show any cent coinage at West Point until 1975, and the 10 million 1 centisimo coins they made for Panama were dated 1975 not 1974.
