please help, I am not sure of what I see, die chip, machine doubling, double mint mark, or do I just need to clean my glasses ??
I'm frankly amazed it hasn't been documented as the "very rare and very dangerous" 1974-S "S over 9" mintmark variety.
Nice pics. It looks like the mm took a hit. A die chip would be raised and yours appears to be indented and it looks like some metal was moved. Sorry but just PMD (post mint damage) BTW: The other guys are just part of the "Get off my Lawn" crew. They're generally nice and knowledgeable, but sometimes patience is a virtue on here, especially after numerous questions from people who watch some of the misleading/inaccurate YouTube clips
Thanks for the honesty. There is a lot to learn. When I started coin collecting , I had no idea what I was doing. I saved: Susan B Anthony dollars, Bicentennial quarters( mostly because I remember being in that parade and dancing thru Eastridge mall in San Jose), Buffalo nickels, Wheat pennies, and any silver coin I came across. I never really looked at them, did not really appreciate how they were made, until after the house fire destroyed ALL our THINGS. My Daughters and I only then started to look more closely at what was lost. Now I enjoy opening penny rolls, and seeing or looking at their differences, even though all the Varieties for any given year overwhelms me.
Yes. There. Is. There is SO MUCH to learn in numismatics that you could start when you first learn to read, never do anything else, and still not get it all. You just NEED to develop a specialty.
