I never much looked into RPMs. I got a bunch of 1974 S and 1971 D awhile back and looked for any DDs or errors and didnt see any (not that it means much). I read some stuff about RPMs and it got me interested in it. Its new to me and hard for me to make comparisons. I know pennies will get PMD that might mask an RPM. Im not at all concerned with value,,,, just the hunt which is why I dont mind when something is beat up a bit. These 74 S I have are in really good shape though. They appear to be a nice color and have only minor blemishes. Some of them look really good.

I wanted to ask about the MM on the 1974 s below. Are RPMs really rare like DDs??

RPM's are more common and more interesting than Doubled die varieties IMHO. But your correct about things that might appear as an RPM. Die Chips and damage are 2 of the culprits.

I read another acronym earlier and couldnt figure out what it meant. I think it was RPMP or something like that. It was when reading about RPMs. Do you know what the 2nd P means????

Your s mm is a good example of something many people would quickly and wrongly think is a rpm rather an already mentioned die chip. The only visible difference from it and a clean rpm is the material at the top opening of the S and the 2 smallest angles in the bottom loop. This cause by a damaged MM punch as the protruding part to make the gap are the thinnest area of metal and after repeated us , the tips for those areas are broken off so nothing to prevent the metal from rising in that area when the punched die is used to make coins. Most new think immediately it is a RPM, like Paddyman said above about the culprits. Jim

Alurid...you are right. I didnt realize the pictures I was looking at were for different varieties of mint marks or styles. 74S doesnt have any listed at VV.

And Wexler's site only has a few.

If you have not seen it already check the 1960-D page in vista as it covers most of the different ones.

Thanks Alurid. Looking at Wexlers "1970D"....it makes it super simple to determine if you have one. You will clearly see the other "D" or a little part of it. It reminds me of the 1960 Lincoln DD I think -001 The one with the small date over large).....if that "D" isnt showing its beautiful self like that then its not it. Seems pretty cut and dry. What an easy marker to look for. Like when Obi Wan said "these arent the droids you're looking for"...."this isnt the mint mark your looking for"...

Holy mint marks! 3/4 of those, I'd just think it was PMD.....because thats what PMD looks like lol to a novice. The ones I would recognize are the ones where the skinny D (sounds like a rapper) is present and shifted away from the MM. Those would be cool to find but I doubt I could identify any of the others without alot of time comparing. I am going to bookmark that page though!! Thanks.

So all mine look basically like the one I took a pic of below. Nothing that lines up at all. They all have decent mint marks.

50 years of searchers make them a bit scarce to find.

I grabbed a lot of the 60 d/d small/lg coins out of a mint bag. I have never found a realistic number estimated of production. After I sent in 20 for grading and the value dropped soon after that, I realized I needed to only send in a couple a year. Glad to hear they are still tough to find in the wild. Jim
