    Hi,

I just found a 1974 quarter that has the top piece(head) separating from the actual base of the coin?!?!
Underneath is reddish brown, it looks like this quarter has been wrapped, almost like a chocolate coin.
I can peel of the top layer to reveal what looks like the same quarter imprint underneath.

    Any clues?????

A clamshell is a coin that appears to have a layer that opens much like a clamshell does.

Pictures would be exciting to see! I can't wait!

    hope that helps,

I agree, that is a really nice "Clamshell" and one that would probably fetch a nice premium on eBay!

    really!!! sounds great.

Is there anymore info anyone can give me on this? Is it rare? What causes it to happen. Is it worth anything?

    thank you!!!

It happens because of an improper bonding between the two layers of the coin. Is it rare ? Not really, but it is not common either. And yeah, it's worth a few bucks but that's about it.
