I am new to the forum and know nothing about coins. I'm sure i don't have anything special, but i thought i would check. I have 2 bags of 1974 pennies. They are directly from the mint, never been in circulation, never been rolled. The bags have $50 worth of pennies. One bag has never been opened and the other bag tore, but all of the pennies are intact. One is from the Philadelphia mint, the other from Denver. I don't have a picture, but can get one. I assume they are probably only wrth the $50? Thanks for the help.
Hi thermwood1 and welcome to the forum 1974 Pennies in uncirculated do carry a small premium, In grades MS-65 and above, retail by the roll( in original mint rolls) for about 1.00 by the bag probly somewhere around 75.00 ,, this is due to the simple fact that in a bag the coins are more likely to bang together and cause coin on coin damage ,,which results in a little lower chance of finding gems,,, that being said to find a market for bags of 1974 cents ?? not impossible but they are not one of the more sought after years. Rick
I agree 100% with Metal Man but it also depends on how much they've been moved and banged around. If some guy bought the bags directly from the mint 30 years ago and has kept them in his closet and only have just now been moved there could still be some nice unmarked coins in them.
But some may have errors from the mint... the only way I know is to get some beer and check each coin. A very painstaking process, but what if you find the 1974 cent of the season? What if you found a 1974-S rotated-die, MS64? That one coin alone would be worth the search...someone would definitely pay you for that coin, but you have to find it first....hours of searching may come to nothing. Well, that's all stuff that we know, but what if? Best of luck to you!
I think if you started searching that many pennies with that same year for a while that you would possibly start to not even notice errors and just pass them through with boredom and monotonoustivity.
By searching that many cents of the same year and MM is how you notice minor variances such as date and MM sizes and the such.
Yes that is true I am sure but what I mean is that the volume of the cents will tire you out and you may end up skipping good ones because you are so used to going through them one by one.
