Well, this is one time I think we might see eye to eye @i2i ! It does look like there is doubling on the "7" with a very small notch on the top-right of the crossbar. I don't know if it is a new discovery because I don't make it a habit of collecting pennies. Chris
Classic die deterioration on a newly furbished die. I like the different variations for the date almost as fun as the 86'
I just did a thorough cleaning of my glasses and still don't see anything significant. Keep looking and good luck.
I am inclined to agree with Chris and P&G, there is something on that 7 and the E/LIBERTY, not sure about the crossbar on the 4. It is a large date...but if no matches and die markers found, probably refurbished die as Pickin and Grinin assessed...Spark
I think that if we started posting good photos like @i2i did we could find some varietys. I said 86' because it is another coin in the Lincoln series that has a lot of die variations. They are fun to collect.
Most of 1974 D has this type of DD http://www.coppercoins.com/lincoln/diestate.php?date=1974&die_id=1974d1do002&die_state=mds Type 1 large date. FOR INFORMATIONAL PURPOSES ONLY: Light to moderate extra thickness can be seen on the date, LIBERTY and the motto. All Type 1 dies will show this extra thickness to some degree or another.
