True or false. My son was reading that in 1974 1.5 million lincolns were minted with aluminum but never circulated. Is this true and if so does anyone know of any leaking out?
It is true, but none were released for circulation. A fair number were given to members of Congress when their input was being solicited but it was expected that those would be returned. Some were, many were not, with the ultimate result that some are now in private hands. The only "Official" example is the one in the Smithsonian's collection. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/1974_aluminum_cent
Mostly true, but there is one thatwas supposedly released. See;http://coincollector.org/archives/002708.html
I wouldn't say it was released, but since it was given to a congressman and then the congressman gave it to a police officer that gives it a traceable provinence. When the mint asked for them back, it was well within reason to assume that the congressman spent, gave away, lost, etc. any of the cents since when they were given out the mint made no strings attached that they would require their return. That is why the treasury hasn't made a big stink about snapping up aluminum cents, and they probably never will. But there are probably around a dozen floating around out there as that was about the number that were unrecovered by the govt.
it seems to not have even been the first Aluminum Cent. there was another about 100 years earlier Ruben
Aluminum coins are really cool I find. They're very light compared to other coins, and you don't get that "coin smell" on your hands. It also is a little harder to discolor compared to nickel, and doesn't discolor like copper.
NO it;s not a copper black and white PHOTO , is this a copper BAW photo also my good ET friend David? ITJUY DGTRE IJUYT TJHU no Alien JAZEC
There are exactly TWO 1974 aluminum cents that have published photographs. The slabbed Toven example, is one and the Smithsonian's example as seen in your last post is the second. Neither of these two coins have dirt in the area between WE TRUST and the rim, as is seen in the B&W picture that you provided. Maybe you'd like to provide the source of your picture to prove me wrong.
So nowyour saying this is not a aluminum cent because you see dirt were is the dirt show me what are you talking about my ET friend. i got the information on aluminum cents by aluminum cents on the internet it;s called aluminum cents. Alien Jazec
Interesting. I didn't realize those were Bronze plated so they could easily be placed in circulation without peopel knowing it. Now I wonder if that is the only one. Probably many people may have handled one and never knew it was one.
Odd the photo here shows color for the slab but the coin is Aluminum looking. That article stated Bronze plated. Wouldn't that mean the coin would look like a normal cent and not the Aluminum appearing one here? Of course a TPGS could not be wrong?
I think that you mis-read the information on the link. No aluminum Cent was ever Bronze plated and put into circulation.
