1974 $1 Ink Smear Error??

    Some call it ink smear and others call it solvent smear.

    No idea on value. Mine cost me $75 back 6 or 7 years ago.

    To the OP: I believe you have an ink smear.

    Steve has a solvent smear.

    Correct me if I'm wrong, but I believe it occurs in the following way:

    An ink smear happens when there is excess ink on the printing plate, before a sheet enters the press. It can also occur when something comes in contact with the sheet before the ink has a chance to dry.

    A solvent is used to clear the ink off the printing plate after a sheet is printed. The solvent is then cleared off using a wiper of sorts, before the ink is replaced and the next sheet comes in. If some solvent is left on the plate, it can cause the ink to run on the following sheet.
