I’ve been collecting for two weeks now so, obviously I need some knowledgeable feed back please. Thanks....
@Mr. Bier It takes time to learn about Mint Errors and Varieties. Here are 2 websites to get you started - http://www.error-ref.com/ http://doubleddie.com/ Welcome to CoinTalk
Welcome too the neighborhood @Mr. Bier ! I'm afraid that you need a better understanding of the minting process. I think you are trying too hard to find something unusual that isn't there. This coin is 44 years old, and just about anything could have happened to it. Chris
I never realized the amount of information to learn, retain, and try to understand. I’m not looking, or even hoping to find big winner. But the possibility creates excitement! My small cents may be worth more melted but I found em! I like em! And I’m always wanting to show others.
But you have to learn to contain that, or, quite literally, go nuts. This isn't criticism of your enthusiasm. It's saying you shouldn't be in this, in my honest opinion, looking for the "big winner." So many of us mistakenly say that's good for the hobby as it brings in new blood and sooner or later they'll settle down and settle in and get with the real program of admiring coins as opposed to looking for the Holy Grail of coins, and, at times, I'm inclined to share that opinion. But really, it's a stupid opinion. You want to learn how to collect coins, we'll teach you everything you need to know. You want to strike it rich, you're wasting your time thinking you're going to do it in this hobby. I hope you understand that, and that you retain your enthusiasm, but that you try to direct it to figuring out what we're about, that is to say, enjoying coins. You make that effort, you're going to be on your way to enjoyment that's going to last you a lifetime. Sorry for the rant.
I like your rant Eddie it just shows your passion to share information with others and your concern that others be informed. As the Canadians say “Good on You A”
I’m a carpenter. I make the cool and unique stuff. To find something so interesting as my life’s work is cool and unique in itself. I even have a collection started of smashed and kick but damaged cents. Appreciation is a main drive gear. With that being said I hope to learn to utilize this appreciation without restraint. But hey........ tell me you don’t think it would be wicked awesome to find something EXTRA special? priceless!
Collect and save what you like. As long as you understand that coins damaged after they leave the mint have no additional value, then do whatever you want. The sites @paddyman98 listed are great places to start learning. Yes, there are a lot of things to learn about this hobby, but like anything, it will take time. As an example, I have no experience in carpentry. Do you think I can develop the skills you have in 2 weeks? I guess you get my point. I’ve been in this hobby for over 45 years (and still learning), so if you find coin collecting interesting, don’t get discouraged, just try to learn whatever you can whenever you can.
