Hi Folks, My Son-In-Law needs help with this 1973 Roosevelt Dime Error he found in his pocket change..up and coming error collector I might say. I note the coin is smaller than normal Rose dime (I used an 1979-S Proof that was in front of me at the time for comps). Legends and date run into rim.. there is no reeding on rim..coins rim is thick showing only copper ..week strike on both obverse and reverse. Wt. is 1.6 grams diam unknown. Pics show some hail lines..those are are mine and need to put them back. What do you think?
The coin is post mint damaged. It was spooned...most likely was going to be made into a ring. This would make a really small ring, so I'm going to guess a baby's ring. Speedy
Hi Speedy, So as my son-in-law I and others reading this post may understand your opionion more, could you tell us more about spooned or spooning? Thank you
Spooning is where someone takes a spoon and taps the edge of the coin with the concave part of the spoon the shape the edge into a flater edge and then cut out the center for a ring. Your coin may have been left in a dryer for awhile and rolled around to get to where it's at now.
The coin was not spooned. It is damaged, though. Coins with this appearance are currently thought to have been trapped in the fins of an industrial dryer. The surface has been pounded into mush on both faces and the edge has been pushed or pummeled into a convex cross-sectional profile.
It appears to be post mint damage. The coin may have been bounced around in an air exhaust system (clothes dryer or dry cleaning machine) with abrasive particles for an extended period of time. Very best regards, collect89
