Just pulled this from a 1973 uncirculated set to add to my Ike uncirculated set I'm putting together. I guess we could call it U.S. Mint post mint damage that happened during the packaging process. Arrgh, now I have to find another 1973 Ike without any damage as this bugs me.
good luck finding cleam Ikes. I've been searching for a few years now and only have a couple to show for my efforts. That would have been a nice 73 though. My frustration is a lot of nice set were placed in the older Dansco and albums containing PVC. You find a nice set but it has PVC damage.
Yeah, this is why I bought a 1973 uncirculated set, to try and eliminate most damage or wear but seems the mint didn't handle this one with care The ones I pulled from a 1974 were nice though at least.
I was in my local shop today and they had a BU set that was in a wooden presentation case that had three coins that had beautiful rainbow toned coins, but they BU set was very low end as many of the coins were not very clean. The 72 was horrible with a ton of hits. I know this isn't a very popular series but it is not an easy one if you have an eye for nice hit free coins.
I don't even really like the Ike to be honest, I think the obverse is one of the worst designs ever but I'm still trying to put together a nice set. This just irked me though, spend money on uncirculated set in hopes that almost always the coins are problem free but then find this. At least the other one in the set was in great shape.
There's the problem right there, the expectation that mint set coins are almost always problem free. Since the early 2000's that can be a valid expectation. Before then the coins WEREN'T handled with great care and quite often come beat up. Frankly even with that rim cut this coin is well above average for a 73-D Ike (Which all came from mint sets.)
Oh I certainly know they're not always problem free. Just have better chances of less problems from an uncirculated set most of the time. Yeah, if it didn't have the rim damage, it is a really decent coin.
