Would some possibly know if this coin is an error coin or just damaged. I have looked far and wide and I haven't seen anything quite like it. Which really doesn't say much. The sum of my knowledge is just about 1 year old now.
Hi John and welcome to CT. I thought I had seen about everything and this one has me a little confused . If it has not been acid treated then I admit I'm not sure what happened to it.
A rotating wire brush can leave this effect on copper cents. here is a previous thread https://www.cointalk.com/threads/damage.350754/#post-3903789
Welcome to CT @SmithvilleJohn. I'd would have to say that it is definitely PMD, post mint damage, meaning it happened after it left the mint, but how, who knows. It appears to be acid etched damage. Maybe our resident CT experts like @paddyman98, @Fred Weinberg, @mikediamond, @JCro57, or others might have better insight.
As @Fred Weinberg would state.. That Cent was whizzed. Altered Obverse. Not a Mint Error of any kind.
Our granddaughter has a similar coin and won't let go of it. We are going to save this post for her to look at. Thanks all for your input and experience. Be safe wear a mask, wash your hands often, stay healthy.
I have posted my thanks already but I believe I post it to an individual not to this actual thread. To make sure that my thanks were received I once again say thank you to all who took the time to educate me. As far as my bubble being burst I would say it was more closely related to a slow leak. Karen from Heritage auctions had actually already told me it was most likely damaged in circulation. But it was she who pointed me in the direction of cointalk. Troy thank you once again for your patience.
