    Hey folks!

I recently purchased a 1972 Type 2 Ike dollar certified by ANACS as AU55. It is the more rare "March Dies" (as opposed to August) of which there is only an estimated 20,000 coins.

Well the holder had a crack in it, and through the shipping process it basically came apart. I didn't really care about the crack but I'm mildly disappointed that it came apart.

I have it in an airtite right now though I still have the holder. I like the coin especially since it is 5 or 6 times more rare than the August Type 2, and though its definately a keeper, its not worth hundreds of dollars or anything.

    So what would you do?

    1. Keep it in an airtite?
    2. Send it back to ANACS to get reholdered?
    3. Send it elsewhere?

It is a nice coin, and a strong 55 with good luster but I don't think it would get graded any higher.
Also, if I do send it back, is the cost the standard amount or is it different since it was already graded once?

    Thanks for your advice!

It'll cost the standard amount to grade, since it's been cracked out, even if it wasn't an intentional crack out. My suggestion; send it back to ANACS. I don't know if PCGS/NGC differentiate between the T2 dies.

If the slab had the March Attribution and you wanted to retain that attribution then ANACS is the only way to go since they are the only TPG which will make that attribution.

You could try getting it reholdered as ANACS just might honor your request. Email Paul DeFelice at paul.defelice@anacs.com and ask him what you should do.

If you do not want to retain the March Attribution then I'd recommend PCGS (hey, I'm heavily invested!) since the Type 2 Attribution does not require an additional $24 to get. Simply submit it as a Modern using the standard coin number which is 97409. It'll cost you $14 for the grading plus an $8.00 handling fee plus $16.95 for return postage plus you shipping to PCGS.

Hmmmm, after spouting all those numbers, maybe ANACS is the way to go? Shoot Paul an email.

Personally, I prefer NGC to PCGS or ANACS, so I'd send it there.

Do the March 1972 T2 Ikes generally sell for a premium compared to Aug T2 Ikes? Or is this more of an Ike enthusiast distinction?

I have never seen a TPG label on a T2 that distinguished between the months. Do you have an example?

If low grade, I would agree with ANACS. In higher grade (say 64 and up), I'd go PCGS. That's simply a statement of resale value. IMO of course. :)

An AU55 I would leave as-is (or in an airtite) if you intend on keeping it....or send back to ANACS if you're planning on selling.

Buy the coin, not the slab. I say if you bought for your collection, just keep it in an airtite or your own holder. You know the condition of the coin but if it gives you a warm fuzzy feeling to spend more money just to have it put back in a new holder with a grade slapped on it, then by all means, send it off. ;)

You can always get a coin slab holder, don't know if that helps. But the last time I heard, grading companies will always take a second look on anything sent back even if its just for re-holdering. So you may not get it back in the same grade.

Yeah I definately dont think it would go any higher. Maybe I'll just keep it in an airtite along with the holder and when I get a few other coins that make sense to send to ANACS I'll send it along with those. It does appear that they are the only ones that distinguish between the two dies.

Thanks to all for your input! :)
