I pulled this 1972 S Proof Penny from a box a couple of weeks ago. It is my only proof penny that I have found. I was looking at some of the coins I had found over the past couple of months and looked at this one again when I scanned it into my computer. I noticed it has some doubling or something in the w of "in god we trust". Is this possibly a double die? I put it in an airtite and it is hard to get out, but if it is possibly a double die then I will open it to get a better scan. What do you guys think?
I'm not seeing anything other than the possible doubling from the doubled master hub for this year. Probably 50% of the 1972s from all mints exhibit this master hub doubling though, so it adds no value.
Oh, I always just thought that if a coin had the s mint mark and had a mirror finish then it was a proof. Are there other coins that have mirror finishes that are not proofs? I am new to coin collecting so more information would help.
There were 377 million Business Strikes and 3.26 million Proofs minted at San Francisco in 1972. Your coin looks like one of the Business Strikes.
