I have these 2 1974 S pennies. One of the mint marks looks screwy to me. I remembered reading something about 1974 mint mark problems, but can’t find the article now. Does anybody know anything about these? Thanks in advance.
Can't tell for sure but there might be a Die Chip on each of them. As for as some well-known problem with these MMs , I have no idea.
Let me give you the real deal . There's a thick & thin date . http://varietyvista.com/01b LC Doubled Dies Vol 2/Obverse Design Varieties.htm There's also a two different mint-mark style . MMS-008 & MMS-009 . http://varietyvista.com/01b LC Doubled Dies Vol 2/San Francisco Mintmark Styles.htm Now if you have the thick date ( ODV-030 ) and mint-mark style MMS-008, that's a rare die pair . Now if you have the thin date ( ODV-031 ) and mint-mark style MMS-009, that's a rare die pair .
Thank You @Hookman @alurid @Rick Stachowski . As far as I can tell. My picture 1 seems to be the Thick Date ODV030 with The MMS008 ( Looks clearer in the picture then in hand), and Picture # 2 is a thin date ODV-031 with the MMS-009 Mint mark (blob). I'm pretty sure I'm right about #2. Number 1 is throwing me a bit. I will research it more and see if I can pin it down better. There is so little difference in the thick and thin dates, I have a hard time telling. Any pointers on figuring it out? Thank You!
The 9 on a thin date the loop on the 9 is square at end of loop not rounded. Nine is also wider on thin date loop area. Look closely at the center of the 4, thin date center is right triangle shape and thick is a triangle. Hope this helps!
