1972 S Lincoln DDO?

Hi guys, Im having a hard time with this coin. I do not know if this is a flat line or has a notch going on the year 1972.

Seen this many times over 50+ years. Machine doubling. Flat and shelf like.

 

See the mint mark doubled too? Strike doubling (same meaning as mechanical doubling).

Most of the "S" mint marked Lincolns from 1968-1974 had some form of problem during this time frame. They either looked doubled, but were not, or they had die chips that mimicked doubling.

 

The mintmarks were hand punched into the master dies back then. When you see the same "doubling" in date and MM, you can be pretty sure that you are seeing machine doubling

 

So that means that the mint mark cannot be Doubled Die since it was hand punched onto the Die.

 

Sorry but it’s not a doubled die. It’s a spender or can can set it aside with a label and use for educational purposes.
