1972 Penny I have a 1972 penny that has been double hit on the side. It has a ear with print on both sides. What could it be worth? It is not round at all due to the ear. Don't know how it even fit in the penny sleeve from the mint.
Howdy rt66 Harley - Welcome to the Forum !! I'm not sure I understand what you are describing - can you post a pic of the coin ?
I have a 1972 penny that has been hit a second time on the side. Print on both side of ear. Not round at all. I got this in change when I was 14. 1972. Not even sure how it could have fit in the sleeve from the mint. I have no way to find out the value. I will try to attach a photo at a later date. Let me know if this may be a rare find. Thanks, Mike
I believe you have a double struck coin! It sounds like the coin was struck once normally then struck a second time partially out of the collar. The second strike almost always disorts a coin's planchet and generally increases in size (to a point) the more a coin is out of the collar during the second strike. The value of the coin depends on the coin's condition, whether there is one or two Dates and the degree of offset of the second strike. There are usually a number of these type errors on eBay, on Ken Potter's website and on Fred Weinberg's website. You should be able to compare your' error coin to one's found on these websites for a idea as to the value. It could be anywhere from $5 to $500 or more! Frank
Huntsman53 and foundinrolls are correct it is a double struck cent. I saw 2 or 3 for sale at the flee market today. Lou
rt66 Harley, Based on the picture of the Obverse (the picture of the Reverse never downloaded) and if the Reverse is as nice, I would guess that the coin may grade at MS-63RD or possibly better! However, the rim ding and the few nicks on the Obverse and any on the Reverse, might lower the grade or at least keeping it from receiving a better grade than a MS-63. Depending on how well you write up a listing for eBay and depending on the quality of the pictures used, the coin would probably bring $20 to $40 at auction. However, it really depends on the mood of any bidders during and at the end of the auction! Below is a link to the auction of a similar error cent that sold on eBay. http://cgi.ebay.com/Double-Struck-7...goryZ524QQssPageNameZWDVWQQrdZ1QQcmdZViewItem Frank
Howdy Bill is more than likley right on the price---he works in this type of coins most of the time and I would trust him. Now Frank---that almost sounds like you are wanting people to hype up items on ebay and take in new people who don't know much....this is not good for the hobby. Sullivan Numismatics is a well known Error coin seller on ebay and at shows but most of the time I have found that he isn't the cheapest....most of the time his prices are a good bit higher than normal. Speedy
Speedy, rt66 Harley asked some honest questions and I gave the best answers that I could based on the facts! How does advising someone of what their' coin might be worth (based on actual closed auctions on eBay for similar error coins) and the best way to sell the coin, become hyping up items? Although I sell many error coins and have sold many Double Struck Cents, I in no way was trying to hype up these type of error coins on eBay, deceive any new people or harm the hobby! The facts are what they are, whether it is Sullivan's Numismatics or Joe Blow! The Buyers set the final price (value) of the coin when they make the winning bid and in most of the cases, you will find that the winning bid was well above what the Seller placed as a Minimum Bid on the auction item! For someone so young and knowledgeable of coins, you are too quick to find conspiracies in many posts on the forums (i.e. the coin has been cleaned!, has been tampered with!, has post Mint damage!, appears to be a Counterfeit!) and lately, especially mine! Slow down, read through the posts a couple of times and think it out before making the wrong assumptions. Frank
Speedy, I am sorry if I was too rough and direct in my repsonse to what I felt was an attack on my character and on me as a Seller on eBay! I have not sold anything on eBay in 5 months or more and if you check my Feedback rating (Seller Id: huntsman532ukm), you will realize that I am honest in my dealings and my advice. To Everyone else on the Coin Talk forums, It has been a pleasure reading your posts, receiving informative and useful information and helping those that I could! I thank everyone for ther generosity of their time, information and the help that they have given to me and others! It appears to me, that I have overstayed my welcome and no matter how many messages I receive and proding for me to come back to this wonderful Website, I am leaving this time for good! This is my decision alone and should not reflect on anyone here on Coin Talk. Keep up the great posts, advice and the sharing of your wealth of knowledge. Take care and may God Bless you all! Sincerely...Frank E. Ferrell
Frank Sorry if you feel I was wrong to disagree with you. I never mean to over-jump a gun. If I post the wrong thing I think you will find that I always come back and say that I'm wrong---its always better to look at a coin as having something wrong with it then to miss that and make someone feel that they have a rare coin only to have to go back and tell them that because you missed the cleaning that it is now worth a little. Again---sorry if I made you mad---please stay around as you know alot about errors---I'm still learning about them. Speedy
