I have a 1972 Lincoln Cent which has a very heavy raised rim on the obverse side of coin with an almost flush rim on the reverse side. Tried taking photos but they do no justice to coin. Can anyone tell me what process of minting caused this Heaviest part of raised rim on the obverse is from about 5 o'clock to 11 o'clock. Hope this all makes sense to someone.
Is the coin actually thicker on one side than it is on the other ? If not - then I would guess that it was struck slightly off center resulting in the lack of a rim or nearly so on the one side.
Sounds like a "finned rim" to me. I'm not exactly sure of the cause but am thinking that it could be from a tilted die causing more pressure on one half of the coin then the other.
