Good morning and Happy Saturday to you all. I have a 1972 DDO that I wonder about. It came in a collection with several counterfeit coins, which makes me question nearly everything. There have been many genuine coins, but everything worth in the hundreds has been fake so far. I had not heard of any counterfeit 1972 DDO cents until I started researching this one. The coin is not clean enough to discern all I want to, yet I am hesitant to try cleaning the wording. Any thoughts? It weighs right, if that helps anything. As always, thank you for your time!
That doesn't look right. Genuine US mint products should usually be crisp and bold. That one looks soft and blurry. It's hard to tell exactly what type of fake that it, but it doesn't look right. It does look off. The surface corrosion might be there to obscure details to raise the question of authenticity or not. The surface finish looks cast to me.
There does not appear to be a seam, but I am pretty confident at this point that it is a fake. I am getting quite a collection of counterfeits... Interesting show and tell if nothing else. Thank you all!
I have to hold my nose when I go there, but you can buy these on the Chinese site for less than a dollar.
There are a fairly large number of DD’s for this coin. Best to take it to several shows and coin shops to get a better feel for what is seen in hand rather than a photo.
No, I did not. The previous owner is deceased, but had several counterfeit coins posted with big money written on them. I may post some later, including a 1916 D mercury dime.
