Good morning and Happy Saturday to you all.
I have a 1972 DDO that I wonder about. It came in a collection with several counterfeit coins, which makes me question nearly everything. There have been many genuine coins, but everything worth in the hundreds has been fake so far. I had not heard of any counterfeit 1972 DDO cents until I started researching this one. The coin is not clean enough to discern all I want to, yet I am hesitant to try cleaning the wording. Any thoughts? It weighs right, if that helps anything. As always, thank you for your time! 20240706_072738.jpg 20240706_072745.jpg 20240706_072339.jpg 20240706_072301.jpg 20240706_072347.jpg

It does look off. The surface corrosion might be there to obscure details to raise the question of authenticity or not.

The surface finish looks cast to me.

I agree it looks cast to me too.

The rim is too thick for a genuine coin as well. That seam on the rim is totally off.

I agree that it does not look right. It has such a fake finnish/tone to it.

This is what a good one looks like.

Does the edge have a seam? That would be a dead giveaway. Looks fake regardless.

There does not appear to be a seam, but I am pretty confident at this point that it is a fake. I am getting quite a collection of counterfeits... Interesting show and tell if nothing else. Thank you all!

I have to hold my nose when I go there, but you can buy these on the Chinese site for less than a dollar.

There are a fairly large number of DD’s for this coin. Best to take it to several shows and coin shops to get a better feel for what is seen in hand rather than a photo.

I hope somebody didn't actually spend $750 on that garbage.

No, I did not. The previous owner is deceased, but had several counterfeit coins posted with big money written on them. I may post some later, including a 1916 D mercury dime.

The ones above seem a little off. Send it to ICG for sure. Jim
