I just got this 1972-D Ike in today and as I was looking it over, I noticed it was a Peg Leg. Then looking at the rest of the letters in Liberty, Especially the L - I - R - Y - it looks like most of them are missing the Serif at the top or bottom and are very thin. Is this caused by a highly over polished die? :rolling: Please fill me in. Thanks Mark

I would agree with you that these were probably caused by a highly over polished dies as you suggest. Also if I remember correctly, the quality of the IKEs in 1971 and 1972 were very poor anyway. That is why it is very difficult to find a MS66 IKE for those years and if you do find one, you are going to pay the bucks. Notice that as the quality improved over the years, finding MS66 IKEs becomes much easier.

One of the things that I pointed out on the IKE group was something that stood out to me very early on in my IKE collecting days. If you look at the reverse of the IKEs, you will notice that the serif on the first L in "Dollar" is often gone...why is that??? I don't remember ever getting a good answer, but probably has something to do with the over polishing of the dies.

Thanks for replying. The coin itself is at least a ms62. If the stars are aligned a 63 tops. It was listed as a choice uncirculated. The pictures were ok but not as close up as I like. The auction was a " buy it now " with free shipping. So I did. The R in liberty look funny so I took a chance. :) Thanks again for your input.
