1972 D/D with the 7 doubled, not the entire date?

Is that possible? There is a little on the 9 but not like the 7.

the seven is best described like the bottom of a ribbon where the ends criss cross.

I agree. Once you see a real 1972 you would never confuse it with a strike double.

 

On the scan it appears the end of "TRUST" has been physically sheared away, so I wonder if this happened to the date also? In either case, it is not one of the '72 DD varieties.
