Can someone help me with the value of a $50 sewn bag of 1971 pennies? The bag has San Francisco stamped on it and has never been opened. Should I sell the whole bag or crack it open and look for something special? About what should I expect to get for the bag?

    Thanks so much.

If it is truly an original mint sewn bag, the biggest concern is the condition of he coin after 4 decades. If it was stored under the best of conditions I would think $350-450. However, many were not and humidity in normal storage can leave small corrosion spots on an otherwise pristine coin. There are not any high interest varieties for this date, (most are in proofs) and each one is a "eyeball breaker". Best hope is to find a few high grade with no spots.

A possibility I might think about is to hi-grade the bag for a couple of rolls of MS-65, and sell the rest in ziplock bags of 500 for $50, as from an original bag. IMO

I think those mint bag are where you're most likely to find weird error coins. Some deformed thing that hardly resembles a coin, and those can be worth a little bit of money.
