while I struck out... there IS something rare out there to find. the search continues... Underweight 1971-P Kennedy half. Plated outside the mint. The missing weight is due to an acid cleaning prior to plating. They left it in the acid too long.
Liked, not because I liked the result, but because I'm really happy that you followed up here. Thanks!
if it weighed a clad weight I would have dismissed it. that acid bath really threw things off. I figured it only fair to follow up so that if by some odd chance someone else runs into a similar situation people now have an explanation to help others. seriously though... who cleans a coin with an acid and then plates it? unless... (this is just speculation) maybe someone tried to intentionally lessen the weight to that of a silver half and then plate it to appear as such a rare error in attempt to deceive and profit from?
Except that a silver half would weigh more than a clad one. It's possible that someone was trying to deceive someone else into believing... something, I guess. But it's more likely that someone was just doing chemistry experiments. I certainly did, although I don't think any of my experiments ever left a coin in a spendable state.
Indeed. It is a rather refreshing change from the norm here. Kudos, Mr. Tallard. That said, I long ago stopped trying to figure out other's motivations when it comes to such seemingly dumb things, and simply because it doesn't really matter. Even though it may be interesting to know, all that does matter is what the (or any) coin is now. Trying to determine its history based upon nothing but conjecture will drive you nuts.
