I have a 1971 D Kennedy Half Dollar. The copper in the middle is not as large as the face's. This is clear visable all around the coin. I have searched and can not find any reference to the error. Any ideas if this is common, what happened, value? Thanks
It is not an error. It is just a variation in the thickness of the copper layer. Yours is one of 302,097,424 minted at the Denver Mint in 1971. Unless it is in exceptional condition, meaning a higher grade uncirculated coin, it is worth 50 Cents.
Having seen the photo I'd say someone with a Dremel or similar tool and a steady hand has removed a portion of the copper the entire circumfrence of the Half Dollar.
