Dont take this the wrong way mrbrklyn, i was just wondering your reasoning behind your opinion? I paid only $4 for the coin so im not disappointed at all, I have some other PCGS MS65 ikes that look similiar thats all.
Looks like some nasty scratches on the obverse down at 4 and 5 o'clock. If they're as nasty as I can tell from the pictures, I'd say this coin is damaged, not gradable.
Really, my 1971 Ike's don't have scratches like that. So do please explain to me how you've come to ignore a scratch that is not part of the design.
The scratch is almost non existent in hand, just the way the photo was taken makes it look worse. the nip on the ear i can definitely see where your coming from. I have some ms 65 with damaged rims.
The scratches between 4 and 5 o'clock hold it back from higher than 63, there are also some hits in key points, like that gouge in Ike's ear.
The scratches can be seen without enlarging the photo; however. The gouge in the ear, is quite distracting.
A 65 would have very few contact marks, yours has several. Also, the luster looks to be impaired enough to keep it from a 65.
Doesn't matter, a scratch is a scratch is a scratch. You think a TPG would just say "Oh, lots of Ike's have scratches" and ignore it when grading? If you're gonna ignore damage (even miniscule damage), then why bother grading it in the first place? If you're gonna ignore the obvious, then you're just fooling yourself at that point. Wipe a coin down with a micro fiber cloth, where it leaves microscopic scratches that are only visible under a loupe or eyepiece under magnification and any real grader will knock down the grade or not grade it at all due to damage. The scratch on this Ike might be "almost non-existent" in hand but that doesn't mean it's still not there and it appears to not be a normal ding from sitting in a bag of other Ike's. That's why I still say, it's damaged and possibly not gradable.
With the bump for being a very tough date I'd call it gemmy. I'd be slightly surprised if it got graded MS-65 though. It might make it with great luster but I'd have to say it's a really nice MS-64+. If that's a scratch to the right f the date then all bets are off. You can look a long time and not find one nicer than this.
Not sure if you saw but the OP states: To me, almost doesn't cut it. That tells me it's a scratch and it's very obvious according to the pictures. I'll certainly say it is likely MS63 but damaged with that scratch, so any slab would state the damage.
