1971 d, DDO? RPM? Let me know what you think, I just got my new 2mp usb microscope and I'm going through boxes of key dates. I was going to list this on flea-bay. Curious what your thoughts are on this coin? I've never had that ability to really see these sort of things before.
I am sorry, maybe I missed it but I do not see a DDO, I do however see a coin that has been hit a few times. Please arrow what you are looking at as I see no serif evidence of DDO..
What you are seeing is something called MD, or machine doubling. It is not a doubled die. You can read about machine doubling here- http://www.error-ref.com/machine-doubling/
When I mean hit I mean PMD, post mint damage. I will not guarantee it as I have had more than a few beers but zoom in at the point that concerns you and I will take another look. For now...I did not see what I needed to see to say DDO.
Ok thanks, honestly I've never been able to see any of this stuff so it's all new to me. I appreciate the help. I'm trying to figure out if I've got any of the varieties. Is this md sort of thing common?
Ethan, then you would be the bidder I am looking for, but drink some more please!! Just looking at the what looks to be a shadowing in spots of the letters or date. Seems everything is hit then shifted to the right a bit and rehit?
From the link above seems this would be the form called push doubling, the picture shows perfectly what I'm seeing. So what is the difference from this and a true double die variety? Cherrypickers "to me" looks like every time they show a ddo it's what I'm seeing now as the push doubling?
A doubled die occurs when the die itself is doubled during the creation of the die. Here's another link- http://www.doubleddie.com/58222.html
Thanks for the links very helpful, it seems the ddo's are very clear from the examples. But in the cherrypickers guide some are so faint and just a small tiny piece on a part of a letter, not the extreme doubling like in the 1955 Lincoln. That's a no brainer. So that's why I thought I was onto something. Are the Kennedy ddo's even out there much? I was pulling 1971d-1974d and 1972 no mint mark for the ddo's and no fg. Based on the volume of halves I get a week I thought it was worth a shot, but maybe it's not? I wish they published estimates of the production of these varieties.
