I'm pretty sure this is a large date 1970s, but could there be a small s
under the large one? Probably not, but it sure looks like it...

With the height of the '1' in 1970...that coin looks like a small date to me.

I have heard of using the height of the 7, the crook in the 7, the loop of the 9, and the strength of "LIBERTY", but never the height of the 1. Could you please explain what you are talking about?

BTW, all 4 of my indicators show this to be a large date.

I have only ever seen a 'small date' with the top of the '1' even to or above the '9'. That's my main diagnostic, and I might be mistaken. I have never seen a 'large date' with the '1' even to or above the '9' in the date.

It's a large date. The size of the one is not a diagnostic tool for these. The end of the inside of the loop of the 9 is squared off on this coin and is not pointed. Also, if you look at the top of the 7 where the top meets the downward portion of the numeral, there is a distinct "line" separating the two parts of the numeral that is distinctive of the Large date. No question about it. I also suspect that it is machine doubling on the mintmark. There is a nice RPM on 1970 S cents and this one isn't it.

    Thanks,
    Bill

Yeah, the drop in the '7' looks like a large date. My bad.

You need to read http://lincolncentresource.com/smalldates/1970Ssmalldate.html. They list 3 of the diagnostics. There is also the notch in the 7 and the position of the bottom of the 7. Those are still all the diagnostics I have heard of.

And another good thread on the 1970S small date vs. large date.

I think it's a large date too. I use to get alot of change when i was a milkman and found alot of coins error . I once got a 1972 doubled die once when they gave me change back .
