    MD, in my opinion...

Shows a sheared or shelflike appearance on both date and MM.

Also, the S is doubled, and it was not on the hub when it was hubbed, right?

Always ask your self first is it a continuation of the primary image or not?

Always ask your self first is it a continuation of the primary image or not?

True doubled dies generally, (the minors anyway) do not have as wide a spread as you are seeing here. They are closer, tighter, rounded and in fact a seperate image and not an extension of the original. That combined with this type of strike doubling will have flat shelve like secondary images exactly like your coin. If the metal, (of the secondary image - the one you are seeing as possible doubled die) looks scooted, pushed or pulled it's a good indicator it's machine/mechanical/strike doubling and not a doubled die. Lincoln's that are often like this are 68 P,D,S, 69-S, 70-P,D,S, 71 P,D,S but there are mnay others.
    Hope this helps you!

Also the term is doublED not double die.

Also the term is doublED not double die.
This goes to the heart of the whole subject - for some reason one of the main stumbling blocks to learning about doubled dies is this very thing. When most people think "double" or "doubled die" they see a coin and say it's doubled so it's double or doubled die coin, or even worse, "the coin was struck twice". This is not how die variety specialist think because they have learned the coin is the end result of a doubled die - we know it began with hubbing of the die and the mint created a doUBLED die - in other words it's a doubled die before the die in question ever strikes a coin. The coin is the result of that doublED die - this is also why they are die varieties simply because we can trace that coin (that die) to one particular die, die variety.
    Hope this helps you!

Thanks.. I know that the Nice DD have that great separation.. They would be easy to spot.. I am a bit confused by the DD that just look a Bit Fat.. If I am to think of those as DD then I find them More often then the MD.. Or seems like it.. The MD seem extreme on some and Just so so on others..
But the Fat style DD.. Like the ones on CopperCoins.com .. Seem more common.. Am I missing something.. I know the Full DD are rare and can see why they would pull a premium.. But if you look at a coin like this.. http://www.coppercoins.com/lincoln/diestate.php?date=1972&die_id=1972p1do004&die_state=eds

DD Searching is killing my eyes!Doing the math.. this week looked at over 5000 Coins.. I think I will go blind..

If you look at the Quarter.. MM Looks Shelf like to me.. But is a Doubled I was told.. Then Look at the 1967 Cent.. MD on the Date But DD on the "Trust".. And MD on the Chin If I am Right....
    I am learning Still...
I purchased 3 Rolls Marked Errors from a guy when I first started.. Most were MD .. so I think I started out always looking for the wrong thing.. Always thinking MD is DD.. I can see on Ebay That I am not alone with this infliction but I feel with enough treatment (Like Coin Talk) I may recover...

    Three things,

    Three things,

    1. Get the Cherry Pickers Guildes.
    2. Read them cover to cover, then really read them esp. the section on true doubled dies verses other forms of doubling.
    3. Buy one each of the different classes of doubled die Lincoln's in early die states.

One more thing - When you see a coin with doubling it's most likley not a doublED die so stop looking (so much) at all these machine doubled coins, they are common as stray cats.

    Keep working!!!

Please do not send in the 70-S that is bad advice!!!

Please do not send in the 70-S that is bad advice!!! It is nothing - I find these every day they are not die varieties. The person giving this advice should not be giving it until he knows what a doubled die is - that is wrong!!!
