So, I've been proof set hunting for one of these, it's my first try into examining coins and looking for the different strike varieties. Think I've found one, can someone confirm whether I'm correct on this coin as being one? Apologies for the low-light pics, I'm going to try to take better ones in the natural light today, as it has really nice color to it.
Looks like Small Date to me, has all three characteristics: 1) Top of the 7 is at least as high as the 0, 2) the top end of the 9 points to the 7's middle rather than the bottom, 3) LIBERTY is weakly relieved. See http://www.lincolncentresource.com/smalldates/1970Ssmalldate.html
Definitely a Small Date. Notice how the 7 does not extend below the 0 at bottom, and the 970 are aligned at top.
Cool, thanks for the confirmation. Anyone care to hazard a guess as to what this might grade out to be? Here's a couple more pics I took this morning. Raining here, not much sunlight and I don't have any good light setup in the house yet to do this better with. Biggest problem I'm seeing is the inability to get a true color representation of the coin, especially through the plastic. If I had to guess, it's more of a "true copper" color than red, but I don't know enough to be sure. (oh, and those scratched on the front I'm pretty sure are the case, not the coin).
