found a 1970 s while searching a box of pennies. Local dealer claims double died...but I would like other opinions from experts who don't claim, but actually know what they're talking about. Any help appreciated...thanx
It appears to be machine doubling as both the date and the mint mark (which was struck into the working die after the hubbing put in the other details( including the date) show it. Since both have the flattened doubling effect, it occurred during the striking process and not a true doubled die. Very common on 1970S cents. Welcome to the forum! Jim
I agree with Jim. this link may here the coin dealer that said it was a D/Die. http://www.coppercoins.com/lincoln/dietype.php?date=1970&die_mint=s&die_type=do&page=0
I have quite a few that are MD or souble struck. It seems a fairly common occurance. As Jello provided, use the die variety search at coppercoins and try to match it to one of the known double die varieties.
