Another easy way to decipher these is by looking at the tail of the 7. Small date = bottom of tail stops almost at the bottom of the 0. Large date = tail ends well below bottom of 0. Just something else to look at. Sometimes a hit or MD can make it tricky when looking at the top of the 7 or the point of the 9 only.

Agree with both being large dates.

Do small dates exist with strong liberty?
Or is it always washed out?

Not that I am aware of, I believe all 1970 s cents with a strong liberty are large date coins.

Since the Liberty can be confusing with circulated cents, the direction of the end of the curve of the 9 as shown is more predictable. Also there is a diagonal crease visible in unc in the angles of the '7' of the large date and not in the small date. Again harder to discern in a circulated cent. I have seen a couple where somehow the tail of the '9' was gently pushed into a 'small date' configuration with a graver tool or a hit. Easier to do than if it was a Zincoln and a thin film of copper which splits.

I've would love to have a small date with strong liberty, if they exist. This is why I ask. Thanks!!!!
