hey guys, I have this 1970 cent, I can't tell what the heck the deal is with it, it has another 1970 ghost like appearance on it above the plain date with an appearance of an S between the plain date and the ghost date, and the bottom of the cent it has a very plainly obvious doubled rim . can you guys please tell me what this might be ?. thanks
First, a double rim may be indicative of an off-center (O/C) strike or a misaligned die (MAD) but without seeing an image of the whole coin, both obverse and reverse, I can't positively identify which it is. Second, I don't have the slightest idea what may have caused the ghost image of the date. Perhaps someone else will chime in with an answer. Chris
I would say your ghost image stems from the coin being placed in an older-style PVC 2x2 (the coin is still inside a 2x2 in the photos), where the metal and PVC have reacted (where touching) and the date has left a subsequent shadow on the PVC. Once the coin rotates inside the plastic..."shadow." Another theory - there is something the date is reflecting off of during the imaging process.
I'll guess the coin rotated in the holder and the second date is just an impression in the mylar. An image out of the holder would help.
We are all learning. Many years ago, I bought a Flying Eagle Cent thinking the date was repunched. It was just the mylar. Fun lesson.
