Below are pictures of four 1970 S Lincoln cents. First the obverse, then a close up of the date & mint mark for that coin. Can someone help me determine if these are small or large dates? To me, it appears that on coin #1 & #2, the upper hook of the 9 points more toward the 7, while on coin #3 & 4, the hook points more towards the mint mark. Also one of the mint marks looks different to me. Is it possible that on the darkest cent that its inverted? The reason I ask is because one end of the "S" is thicker than the other. It looks reversed on that one. I do not see that any of the coins have a weak strike on the word liberty that is associated with the small date. One of the 7's looks to be even with even/flush with the top of the zero. I've looked at graded coins where the 7 extends below the bottom of the zero yet its labled "small date." So I'm thoroughly confused.
All large dates. Do you have a descent cropping program on your pc? There is a leveler, on some. Use the line torun from the 9 to 0. If they line up you have a small date. Havnt found one yet. Good luck!
The top of the 9 in 0 or the bottom of them? Because I just did that and the tops on two of the coins line up perfectly.
Based on this picture though I agree with @Pickin and Grinin because all of the 7s definately extend below the zero.
Ok. What about the mint mark being inverted? On coin #2, the skinnky part of the "S" is at the top. On coin #4, the skinny part is clearly on the bottom. Is one of them inverted, or are they 2 different MMs?
Now this is a coin collectors thread like no else.. I clicked on the link for the small date / large date comparison... I could tell the difference right away... Pretty neat stuff... I guess you really have to be a collector to want that coin... My passion would be to find a roll of small dates and have them graded for VALUE !
