Hi! I’m new so much will be posted poorly, probably. I picked up this 1970s mint set in an on-line auction hoping for a “small date” set. To my surprise I got a damaged penny in the set…not a small date. I think/guess it is a die damaged coin. Can someone tell me what happened to this penny and is it valuable?? The reverse side may not show up the circles, there are two I can see on the pic but there is one more not seen on the steps of the monument. The damage on Lincoln’s head and rim are shown. thanks.

Unfortunately, I don't think the cent is damaged......quality control back in the 70s was bad at the mint and I think that this coin was not handled properly before it was packaged in the plastic. I hate to tell you that if it is damaged with scratches and dings, then it is probably worth less. If you had a true error coin in the plastic, then it would be worth a premium, but this looks like toning or damage.

Thats just my opinion though and someone would have to look at the coin in person to make an accurate determination.

Thanks for the quick reply!! I agree the circles on the obverse could be toning from the cent resting on some kind of cage. A perforated cage that would (?) be use to clean off production oil (?). The circles are evenly spaced. The damage on the reverse is not toning, it is deeply indented from the rear of Lincoln’s head to his nose. Also on his lower bust up around his back to his shoulder. The blemish also runs around the rim from the “L” in liberty up to the “N” in IN GOD WE TRUST. The pics are not the best but better enlarged.
