1970 Mint Set Penny Error

Hello, I inherited my step fathers coin collection, and while I’m not really a coin collector most of them seem to be general/average coins. I do have one 1970 mint set that one of the 2 pennies is messed up. There’s a large “dent” in the edge, to the point that the “T” in “Trust” is nearly unreadable. The pics may not do it justice, but can anyone offer an idea if it is special or anything?

Looks like it could be a small curved clip but the pictures are a bit too fuzzy to tell. Not particularly valuable, just interesting.

Much better. Definitely looks like a small curved clip, a minor mint error. Again, an interesting item and not too often seen in mint set packaging. Not valuable but still a nice find.

Usually when somebody posts about a coin in a mint set it is just damage that occurred during the packaging process. Good to see a real error coin for a change!

Ok, yeah - I’m no pro but it looked funny compared to all the other sets that look in perfect shape. Odd to think of one getting packaged in a mint set like that, but I guess no one can be perfect 100% of the time.

Not too surprised. It is a pretty tiny clip. Glad you caught it!

Another quick question, the “T” in “Trust” looks weird. Like it has no bottom section or its really feint. Would that have hallened at the same time as the clip, and any idea what would have caused it?

Like, if you can (I had to screenshot it) zoom in on the S and T. They look weird?

That goes along with the clip. Insufficient metal to fill the letters completely in that area.

You'll get there with some inquisition and some good advice. Read what you can. Nice find by the way. I'd hold on to that cent myself!

Looks like a clipped planchet to me.

Nice find! For more info on this type of error just google "clipped planchet coins" and browse whatever comes up. Most people post random damaged coins here thinking that they have valuable errors but it's rare to see an actual error coin.
