Hello All. I am assuming this is a 1970 D quarter struck on a dime planchet. It weighs only 4.27 grams and is very thin. Can anyone else shed a little more light on this particular coin? Thanks in advance.
I would guess it most likely happened during circulation and is not an error/not possible anyway i think.
It can't be a dime planchet. The quarter is normally 24.3mm and the dime is 17.9mm. Much of the legend would be missing. Can you give us a photo of the edge of this quarter "sandwiched" between two normal pre-1999 quarters?
A quarter struck on a dime planchet would be so thin it would feel like a soft guitar pick!!! Don't think it would have enough mass to allow for the remaining detail shown on this coin. JMHO!!!
4.27 grams is still to heavy a dime planchet of that time weighs around 2.30 grams and so do the rest after 1964.
Ever put a cent on a railroad track? They really squish out big but wafer thin. You have to be correct, there can’t be much depth at all left to take this detail.
Here's a cent on a foreign planchet a little smaller than a cent. Notice the missing detail. If your Quarter was struck on a dime planchet Washington's face would not be able to be there in its entirety. Hope this helps.
No on caliper. Looks like same diameter when sitting on the other quarter just a hair thinner and on a diet at 4.27 grams
That confirms my suspicions about it being a thinner than normal planchet. How much thinner I don't know.
