The "floating roof" is caused when the die is maintained to prolong its life. Parts of a coins surface become faded, or disappear completely when the die is polished and cleaned.

For some reason when I hit post reply my post came up 4 times. I managed to delete 2 but I had to cancel the text and put something in its place on the 3rd one..

Did you check your pockets? Sometimes we forget to check the obvious places it could be. One day I was looking all over for my glasses. Then I went by a mirror and saw they were lifted up on my head, I just forgot.
