Mintmarks were handpunched into the die at this time Often a time they came quite close to the date. It has no added value, sorry mate. =/ Keep on looking though! As you gain knowledge and experience you will be able to differentiate effectively.
Welcome! Before 1990, mint marks were punched into each die by hand. Due to this, you'll see a lot of variation in mint mark position. This is normal.
Yeah, I've found lots of "Blob-S" mintmarks on 1970's cents. I thought it was somethin' special. Turns out not so much.
