Looking for opinions on this cent. I thought maybe pmd at first but recieved some information about rollers causing tapered planchets. Any information or knowledge is appreciated. Thanks.
@Rugar - no it's not a tapered Planchet @LaCointessa - no it's not an example of a misaligned die strike at all. Just damage.
Thanks Paddyman98. The OPs coin looked to me just like the 2nd photograph down on this web site which is supposed to be an example of a misaligned die error. http://www.lincolncentforum.com/misaligned-die-errors-vs-off-center-strikes/ I am glad I asked. I have a half dozen coins off-center like this and I was going to hang onto them; but, now they'll go back to the bank.
I was actually thinking about this as I fell asleep and remembering that in the OP photograph the rim looked squarish and in the photograph in the link I put, the rim looked nice and round. I see the difference now. Thanks @paddyman98 Now I can go back to my coins and see whether they are really misaligned die specimens or merely coins that suffered damaged.
If the planchet was pressed .. or if you see it is an expanded circle. Then ask yourself the question .. how is this now non-round planchet gonna fit into the collar to be struck ? and if there was no collar, then it would look far different. Plus how would the feeding fingers feed it to the striking area? looks like all damage to me too.
