Check out the pics of what I came across. No last digit, no "In God We Trust", and half of the Liberty is gone.

My wife is leaning towards someone doing this themselves, but I can't see how, especially as the other side is perfectly normal.

What do you guys think? If if my wife is correct (which she normally is), how could it have been done?

    Thanks,

    Chas.

Either it was struck through grease, or it's a roman cent from 197.

Pretty common for this much grease?

    Real value?

How do I find out what year it was minted? LoL. Dunno where to put it in my collection.

    LOL!!!

My first impression was, how would this coin suffer so much wear before being taken out of circulation if this was done at the mint. But the reverse has much less wear.

Try comparing the details with other '70's cents.

I tried comparing with the other 10 for the year but couldn't come up with anything. I'm thinking 1971 but not too sure. Thanks though.

Any idea on what this coin would be worth if I were to sell?

    Thanks,
    Chas.

If it's struck thru grease that's a pretty severe example.

So would you recommend sending it in for grading?

I'm asking this because I don't want to pay big $ (I'm still in the little leagues) to have it graded.

It might be a 10-15 dollar coin, but it also might get more on ebay. it is more severe than most and the date is cool.

I agree with Malak1. I have never seen something like this on a coin this old. I will ponder this one...hmmmm

Wow, only $15.00? LoL, not bad though considering I got it for only a cent in a bank roll.

EDit: So is the general thought that it is an error coin or done post minting?

    Check michaeldura2's avatar. LOL
It looks like grease filled die at the mint to me, yes, I'd say it's an error. $15 may be a bit low, it really depends on what the buyer is willing to pay, lots of errors are unique, there were probably several made by this die before it was fixed, some with more or less detail as the die got worse.
