View attachment 313992 Hi Everyone, Doing some searching today and pulled this. What is everyone's thoughts? Is this A Doubled Die Or MD. It's Hard to tell. I will try to get some better Photos
If your cent looks like this then yes, you have the DDO, if not then you don't. It doesn't look like you have it. Keep on looking! You will surely find one!
In fairness, there is also a 1969 S-DDO-002 , which is less extreme by far, such that it cost 1/2000th of a Die #1 ( shown above). I would guess that many on the forum would say that the die #2 was a MD also, except the slightly rounded doubling and that the devices weren't reduced by it. Take a look as it is easy to miss when looking through cents. http://www.coppercoins.com/lincoln/diestate.php?date=1969&die_id=1969s1do002&die_state=mds
Jaceravone, not saying the OP coin is a ddo but you saying that it HAS to look like the big one for 69 is misguiding the OP. There is always the possibility to discover new doubled dies. Again not saying the coin is a doubled die just making a point. As a matter of fact I didn't even look at the pics because I'm on my phone.
@gunnovice You are correct by saying what you are about my reference, but as a variety collector myself, I find that when most people are posting about a 69S or a 55 or a 72 they are almost always referring to the "Big ONE". And yes as Jim (DesertGem) pointed out there are other minor double dies for the 69S and 55 and 72 that command way less money. There is always the chance to find a new variety, but even as bad as the OP's pics were, I can assure you that it was not a DD but rather MD. But I understand what you are saying and point taken.
Great point desertgem! Some folks only look for the "big ones". I look for any and save them all. I even save the "crappy" unlisted doubled columns. To me, a doubled die is a doubled die. Even if it's only worth 50 cents or so, who wouldn't trade a cent for 50. I'm sure my outlook will change as I get more seasoned, but for now it's the "thrill of the hunt." You can't always slay a moose. Sometimes you have to settle for a quail.
It also looks like there is some MD visible on the date as well (look at the northeast part of the 9), though it is hard to pick out since the doubled die is so strong. 1969-1972 had some pretty extreme MD, though it is interesting to see it on this famous doubled die as well...
Yep very common believe it or not. Called isolated strike doubling. Got a full lecture on it this summer - well not really, but got some info from some CONECA members on their forum. Here is the link to read about it. http://www.error-ref.com/isolated-machine-doubling.html. So you can have a coin that has a doubled die, but then has MD.
Hi Everyone Thank you all for your imput on this coin. I was able to take better and clearer photos if you all don't might taking a look again. I know this one isn't the Big one but if it's a new varity Than I'm happy Thank you all again. Frank
I would like to see a better photo of the area around "In God..." Looks like something is going on there. As for the date, I am even more convinced that it is MD. Do you see how the metal flow on the 1 flows out to the right and down below the base. Classic MD. Here is a 1 from my personal photos. Same characteristics.
here are a Few more Pictures of that area, Is it Possible that I'm seeing Hub Dubling maybe. I see the shelf like resemblance on the date but I Al see Strike lines? Thank you for you imput
