Yes I'm new and yes I know this isn't 'the' super rare, but I had to post this one I just found that has quite a bit of doubling. The date and mint mark are very doubled and I see quite a bit in the other letters too, but not in all of them. Any info on this is greatly appreciated! Jerry (image attached)
I scanned the back and found some letters doubled there too. I think that means this is called a double-strike?
The date is the results of machine doubling. The reverse I can't make out. Kind of a fuzzy picture. And WELCOME :hail:to the forum.
That's the old culprit Machine doubling indeed. The 1969 is probably one of the hardest ones to find along with the 1972, and 1955 doubled dies the kings I call them, because of there major seperation. To be honest with you I think they rarely exsist in circulation anymore but keep the eyeballs open anyway. JC
Thanks for the info and for not laughing at me! ha. I think I got it down what to look for after reading up on how to tell the difference. The Machine Doubling will flatten the image underneath, but leave the top image raised... whereas true die doubling will leave both raised. Sound right? I could tell the date was Machine Doubled because of that and also because the mint mark was doubled. What peaked my interest was the word 'Trust', whose doubling didn't look like the others. But I need a better scan. Anyways, it sure is fun looking (but addicting)! I've been through about 1000 coins so far with 2000 to go. This was the best error example I have found so far. Although I did find a couple 1960-D & 1980-D errors. I'll post them later. Thanks! Jerry Edit: Check out the 'R' & 'U' in the word trust. You can see the valley's between the doubling. It almost looks like the die twisted.
Welcome - searching is fun and addicting. Wait till you find that first toughie or true error - then the addiction will really set in. Enjoy.
