Hi I have thos 1969S penny that look like a DDO. I brought it to a local coin shop and he told me he think it's a die chatter. Can anyone tell me if it's a DDO or die chatter? Also what is a die chatter & how can you tell the differents? I hope these pics comes out ok.
Die Chatter is another name for Machine Doubling or Strike Doubling. See the link. http://hermes.csd.net/~coneca/content/StrikeDoublingFlyer-PDF.pdf
And the pictures are blurry, but in my opinion based on what I see (or don't see), this is not a DDO. Again, see link. http://www.lincolncentresource.com/doubledies/1969Sddo1.html
Yours is not a doubled die. A real one will be dramatically different. LIBERTY and the motto will have a spread that is unmistakable.
Robec is correct. The 1969-S Lincoln DDO is one of those coins that if you've got it, there is absolutely no doubt about the doubling and no questions would ever be asked unless it was about authenticity. A Machine Doubled 69-S on the other hand, ALWAYS ellicits questions on whether or not its a Doubled Die.
I know my pics are not that good. I am trying to get a better camera, however according to the link the date on my coin look like the date on the coin in the link. The rest of the coin is normal. It's hard to get a good pic because the coin is dark brown and a little worn.
Way to keep up the hunt. The last couple recorded finds of this DDO actually came from Michigan. One example that was graded AU by a TPG ended up selling in excess of $25k. It's quite a find, and the diagnostics are unmistakable like Robec has pointed out.
Personally, I believe that you are mistaken as your coin looks nothing like the photo which is linked from the LincolnResource.
