So I found a 1969 S penny and i look too shiny I think. How can I tell if it's been cleaned or polished or tampered with? It'd be great if I could spot these myself when going through the rolls. There's alot of cleaned coins in circulation, I keep getting all hopeful I found a nice high grade coin only to be told it's junk.

Looks like it's been tucked away for a number of years.

It's not bad but it isn't high grade.
XF-AU start looking at mint sets, you will see the difference.

Do you have a redbook? That will help you get started.

Also, look at the Photograde site. It will help you learn how to grade.

It would be nice if you had a photo of the entire coin, both obverse and reverse, instead of this jigsaw puzzle.

The default answer always seems to be 'junk' when asking others. I wouldn't put too much weight on the default answers if I were you. Just my opinion.

What is supposed to be a default answer. Do you think that this is a Gem MS coin?

I also would go XF-Au, small amount of machine doubling, but a good hole filler. Jim

The one thing that helped me the most was to look at as many coins as possible that had not been messed with. Once I learned what is normal, I became better at spotting problems.
