I am reluctant to submit this coin, for one simple reason - embarrassment. Unfortunately, the coin is very dirty – especially “IN GOD WE TRUST” – covered with a dirt-like crud that makes it hard to photograph (P-III shows it best). I believe it wouldn’t be difficult to remove, as one area I experimented with came off easily. But I’m going to leave the rest as is. I’m not good at photography, and this is the best for present. Previously, regards the 1970-S DDO-001 Lincoln Cent submitted, I asked for any hints on how to capture images of error coins…I hope someone can give me a few hints with this coin. At any rate, this coin seems like a possibility – any objective opinions will be most appreciated. Sorry about the photos, as its hit and miss as usual. Thank You, A.J.
i cant tell on the 4 images of IN GOD WE TRUST .. not enough of the coin to get my bearings... that 1969-s is nice!
A.J., I'd say you did a pretty good job on what you could, that date. And it looks pretty, well, "interesting" (how's that for a ringing endorsement? ). But here's what you're looking for: http://koinpro.tripod.com/Articles/1969SDoubledDieCent.htm. Good luck.
Thanks to both of you for your thoughtful words of encouragement. I’m very glad Ken Potter’s link was mentioned, because it is precisely those very images and description(s) I used as a standard in my search. I have always wondered how such images were obtained, and I’m thinking it must be with the aid of a stereoscope. Does anyone know for sure? I have written Ken Potter several times, and he always responded promptly; however, I’ve never asked about photography. I’m going to try certifying the coin and I’ll let you know regards the outcome – either way. Thanks again, A.J.
Nice find. :thumb: I dan't tell if it has the doubling, but it could. Don't know. Still, pretty nice. Have you spoken to him recently? When I tried to email him about a coin I had he tolde me from now on he is basically not going to give an opinion if I don't send it into him and pay for him to examine it and etc. So I wonder why he would answer you and tell me this, unless you haven't asked him recently. Might just be something though. I can understand him wanting to get paid for his opinion, though. But good luck on your coin. It is nice. :thumb: I have no idea how they get those god of pics, but I guess they have some nice equipment. Phoenix
Phoenix, The last time I contacted Ken Potter was a little over a year ago (regarding a 1946 DDO Roosevelt Dime), but he responded directly at that time without any mention of payment. A.J.
Nice photos, unfortunately it is NOT the 'biggie'. That one has very distinct doubling on the date & motto. This MAY be strike doubling. But, I am not sure.
Treashunt, I know the photos don't show it, but there is spacing between the doubling throughout. The only other variety listed at CONECA has "strong spread but weak doubling on upper first 96 of date". It looks like the last 9 exhibits doubling, so it is the 'biggie' or nothing. I'd like to clean the upper part of the coin and photograph the motto again, but not sure. Do you know of a way to clean copper coins (looks like dust and a powdery residue from the other Lincoln Cents)? Thanks, A.J.
